LECTURE NOTES

Point out that the figures in this book require a resolution of 800 x 600. If necessary refer students to Appendix D for more information about how to change the resolution on their computers. Use Figures 1-2 and 1-3 to illustrate starting Word. Discuss Other Ways to start Word. Define Language bar and task pane. Mention that the Language bar displays only when Office Speech Recognition software is installed. Refer students to Appendix B for more information about the Language bar. Point out the Getting Started task pane in Figure 1-3. Explain why the Language bar and Getting Started task pane will be closed. Discuss More About Task Panes on page WD 7. Define toolbar. Note that the toolbar buttons display on one row. This row contains buttons from two toolbars: the Standard toolbar and the Formatting toolbar. Note that the toolbars also can be displayed on two rows by dragging the second toolbar down. Discuss More About The Office Assistant on page WD 9. Emphasize that each time Word is started, the window appears as it did the last time Word was used. Explain when task panes open and note some important task panes. Using Figure 1-4, tell how to open or close a task pane, display a different task pane, and switch among opened task panes.
